Khammam: In the shivering Khammam district both sun and residents rise very late as fog and cold wind rule the horizon these days. According to Met department, the district has been experiencing coldest winter season this year after 2010. In 2010, the district had recorded lowest temperatures.
According to officials, after Adilabad district, Khammam district is experiencing lowest temperatures for several days. The erstwhile Khammam district had recorded 30 degree Celsius maximum and 20 degree Celsius minimum temperature on December 26.
After that day the temperature slowly went down in the district continuously from December 27 29/ 17, on 28 28/14, on 29 28/15, on 30 28/13, on 31 27/12 and January 1st 28/13 degree Celsius. It is not only the falling temperature that is affecting people but the chilly winds which are troubling most. That’s why people in the district prefer to stay indoors. It is becoming most troublesome in the night to come out as the winds gets colder and chillier.
On the other hand, the morning is not better. When the residents wake up in the morning they see the entire district wrapped up in the blanket of fog most of the morning hours, particularly in villages. In the tribal hamlets and also in the city people wake up late due to heavy fog and cold winds.
The residents said it was the first time after eight years the temperatures have been fallen like that in the district. The children and old age people have been suffering from various health-related problems due to chill in the air. At least six old age people have died this year so far in this winter season. The cold weather conditions have also affected foot falls in temple and tourist places which usually witness huge crowd in the winter season. The concerned officials said, the situation will continue in week days in the district.
However, the only thing that is not affected in the district is the production of coal. According to Singareni Collieries Company Limited(SCCL) Director (Operations) S Chandrashekar, the production has been continuing smoothly in the open cast coal mines. “We are making are giving all facilities to employees who are working in the open cast mines,” he added. The regular production which is two lakh tonnes will not be affected. The transport of coal is also going on smoothly, he added.
