Create sub-quota for BC women: Krishnaiah

Basheerabagh: National BC Welfare Association president R Krishnaiah opined that BC women can be empowered only when a sub-quota is created for them in the Women’s Reservation Bill which is yet to be passed by Parliament. He was speaking at a programme organised on the occasion of 188 birth anniversary of Savitribai Phule held at BC Bhavan on Thursday. The programme was presided by general secretary of state women association Bandaru Latha.
Emphasising the need for giving proper representation to BC women through the women’s reservation bill, Krishnaiah said that the bill won’t have any validity if BC women are not given proper representation, and, hence a sub-quota for BC women should be created. Along with political reservations, the bill should also provide 50 per cent reservations to BC women in education and employment, he demanded.
While about 180 BC women can get elected to Parliament with political reservation, around 27 lakh BC women would get jobs in central government and 1.8 crore BC women would fine employment in various state governments if 50 per cent reservation is given to BC women in education and jobs, he said. He also stressed the need to formulate new laws for protection of women. He lauded the efforts of Savithribai Phule in providing education in an era which limited women to kitchens.
