Basheerbagh: The principal of Government Dental College and Hospital, Dr Venkateshwarulu, said that diamond jubilee of the college would be celebrated on January 11 and 12. The college was established by Dr MG Rao, a Chennai-based dental doctor, in 1959 and it completes 60 years this year. Members of the college alumni association provided details of the celebrations at a press conference organized at Press Club here on Thursday.

Many college students have settled abroad and have been established as noted dental doctors. Until 1980, the college offered only video courses. Later, PG courses were introduced. Currently, there are eight faculty doctors and 50 resident doctors in the college, and it has various specialised departments. A dental hospital is also being run in the college. Every day about thousand out patients come to the hospital for treatment. The hospital provides corporate-level medical treatment for free of cost to patients. The hospital also conducts surgeries for oral cancer patients who are in initial stages.

The diamond jubilee celebrations will be conducted by the college alumni. Recently, the alumni was formed, with noted dental doctor Padmasri Dr S Narayana as president, and other noted dental doctor Dr B Chandrakantha Rao as vice president. About 60 former students of the college are expected to participate in the celebrations. The celebrations will start on January 11 at college and the second day celebrations will be held at Leonia Resort, located on the outskirts of the city near Shamirpet.
