Bhadradri-Kothagudem: The first phase of gram panchayat elections was conducted in the district on Monday without any untoward incidents, said District Collector Rajat Kumar Saini.

In the district, elections were held in 150 gram panchayats in seven mandals and the overall percentage of polling was 83.39. The election was scheduled to be held in 174 gram panchayats in the first phase, where in 22 gram panchayats were declared unanimously elected.

A total of 1,50,786 voters have cast their votes and of them, 88,927 were men and 91,879 were women. Over 90.3 per cent polling took place in Mulakalapalli and 89.5 per cent in Aswarapuam. The voting percentage in other mandals is as follows: Burgampahad-88.3, Cherla-82.9, Dummugudem-87.3 and Palvoncha- 83.12. Manuguru recorded the lowest voting of 65.69 per cent.

The District Collector visited polling stations at several places in Mulakalapalli and Aswapuram mandals and interacted with the officials. He thanked the public and the officials for extending their cooperation in conducting the voting in a smooth manner.

Counting of votes began in the afternoon hours. According to sources, the candidates supported by the TRS and Congress have won the election in majority gram panchayats in the district. However, the election results are yet to be declared officially.
