Khammam/Kothagudem: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has displayed its might in first phase of local body polls in the erstwhile Khammam district. The party supporters won the elections and the cadres celebrated their victory on Tuesday.

Over 50 per cent of candidates supported by the TRS won the gram panchayats polls. At many places, the Sarpanch posts and the ward members posts were won by the pink party, while at some places only the Sarpanch post was won by the party supporters.

According to sources in the district, the TRS-backed candidates won in as many as 96 gram panchayats in Khammam district, including villages where the panchayats were elected unanimously. While the elections were held for 188 panchayats, 21 were elected unanimously.

Similarly, in Bhadradri-Kothagudem, the candidates supported by the TRS won elections in nearly 80 gram panchayats. The elections were held for 174 gram panchayats in the first phase, while 22 gram panchayats were elected unanimously. Of the 22 panchayats, pink party won in 17 villages.

With this, the TRS has overpowered the opposition parties like Congress, TDP and others and has strengthened its base in rural areas. On the other hand, many of those got elected in the election with the support of other parties have been contemplating to join the TRS.

The candidates contesting in second and third phase elections with the support of other political parties are also keen on joining the TRS. On Tuesday, at Nagiligonda of Chintakani mandal in Khammam district, a sarpanch candidate P Nageswara Rao backed by CPI joined the TRS. Here the election was scheduled in third phase.
