Farmers staring at drought conditions
The plight of the farmers in Parigi continues unabated in the Rabi season too, as they have incurred heavy losses owing to deficient rainfall and scarcity of groundwater Though the State government is providing power supply round the clock to the crops, it is of no use to the farmers as the groundwater levels have dropped drastically
Parigi: The plight of the farmers in Parigi continues unabated in the Rabi season too, as they have incurred heavy losses owing to deficient rainfall and scarcity of groundwater. Though the State government is providing power supply round the clock to the crops, it is of no use to the farmers as the groundwater levels have dropped drastically.
It has been reported that farmers usually cultivate more than 15,000 acres of crop during every Rabi season. But this season, it has been limited to only 5,000 acres due to water scarcity. Groundnut and paddy crops dried up in Parigi, Doma, Kalkacharla, Bomraspet, Kodangal, Tandur, and Yalala regions.
Farmers are reeling under distress as they failed to get water from digging bore wells. There are more than 60, 000 bore wells in 18 mandals of the district. Officials estimated that farmers dug up 5, 000 bore-wells during the last one month. Each bore well costs anywhere between Rs 50, 000 and Rs 90, 000. As the bore wells are going dry, farmers have been severely affected.
Speaking to The Hans India here on Friday, a farmer from Rangampalli, Kishtayya, said that they incurred a loss of Rs 30, 000 on their one-and-a-half acre crop as the crop didn’t get sufficient water for cultivation.
He said that it was hard to rely on agriculture as there is no water in water bodies and even groundwater level is also gradually depleting.
