Hyderabad: AIIMS-Telangana is all set to start functioning, initially, with MBBS UG course from this academic year (2019-20). However, no decision has been taken still about the temporary campus from where the first-year classes run until the new infrastructure is built over the next five-year period in the nearly 200-acre site at Bibinagar that the Telangana government had allocated for the purpose.

It is learnt that four sites have been recommended by the Health department and this includes the existing Bibinagar site in which NIMS was functioning partly for quite some time. The other three being - Gandhi Hospital and two closed engineering colleges in Bhongir having built-in infrastructure.A team of AIIMS authorities visited Gandhi Medical College and Bibinagar site on Saturday to explore the possibility of establishing the temporary campus.

With regard to the Bibinagar location (that housed NIMS extended facility until a few weeks ago), the Telangana government has already pumped in nearly Rs 150 crore into the construction of a five-storey building with a built-up area of 7.8 lakh square feet. While the structure is almost complete, creation of facilities were done in cellar, ground and first floor with works pending in second to fifth floors.

This facility can be used provided a few modifications have to be done to meet the requirements of AIIMS. Experts say modifications, mostly minor, can be done in few weeks without any difficulties.AIIMS authorities who inspected Bibinagar site on Saturday evening looked to be content with the available facilities there. Some modifications will be enough to run classes, they felt.

But they insisted on establishing a police check-post to ensure safety and security of girl students studying in the college and Telangana authorities assured them that it would taken care of. The other locations being considered is Gandhi Medical College in Musheerabad. The college is spaciously built with additional space and it can easily accommodate MBBS classes for AIIMS-Telangana. AIIMS authorities were also shown this location.

Meanwhile, Yadadri-Bhongir district administration, which has requested the AIIMS authorities to not move out of their district for temporary campus as AIIMS, Bibinagar site falls in their jurisdiction, has shortlisted buildings of two closed engineering colleges, including Sri Sarada Institute of Science and Technology. These proposals have been sent to the Health department to pass on to the Central authorities.

According to a senior official in Telangana Health department, AIIMS authorities inspected the sites shown by the government and they will submit their report to higher-ups in New Delhi soon. With staff recruitment to be taken up in the next couple of weeks, it is hoped that the Centre would shortlist one location among the four and communicate the same to the Telangana government. Sources said that existing Bibinagar building is the front runner for the temporary campus.
