Secunderabad: South Central Railway Mazdoor Union organised the International Women's Day celebrations here on Friday at an educational centre with great fanfare with over 800 women employees taking part. The meeting was presided over by Sarojini Reddy, women's coordinator.
SCR General Manager Gajanan Mallya was the chief guest while his wife Jayanthi Mallya was the guest of honour. They spoke of the need to empower women. He said that SCR has only 9% of women employees, which was very low and he assured that that he would take steps for the safety and security of women at workplace.
Delivering the key note address, Dr P Madhavi, Reader (Retd), Kasturba Gandhi College, who is now with the Human Rights Forum, said that the Women's Day has nowadays become a marketing day used for advertisements, instead of a day for rededicating themselves for assertion of their rights. Though women have progressed, a lot remains to be done still, she added.
Bemoaning about the plight of women, Dr Madhavi said that in families, workplaces, and even law-making bodies like Parliament and State Assemblies, women were being ill-treated. Their rights were being trampled and they do not get justice. After prolonged struggles, domestic violence is now recognised as a criminal offence. But, do the women have the conducive atmosphere to raise their voice, she wondered.
The 'ME TOO ' movement, which gained momentum in the film industry was a good beginning where women were standing up and asserting their rights, Madhavi said and added that today, women should not remain silent anymore and should start fighting for the their empowerment.
Annapurna, executive officer, explained as to how she came up in life to reach her present level through persistent efforts and urged women to scale greater heights in future.
SCRMU president Srinivas and general secretary Ch Shankara Rao called upon the women to assert and fight for their rights and not wait for someone to fight on their behalf.
Sarojini Reddy, Swaroopa, Manjulatha and Rama Devi were the women leaders who spoke of the importance of the Women's Day and the need to organise struggles.
Rama Rao regaled the audience by his rending of songs on the plight of women.
