Vidyasagar Rao spoke at the inaugural session of a two-day national seminar on ‘Mission Kakatiya: A new hope for sustainable rural development in Telangana State’ at Kakatiya University in Hanamkonda on Friday.

The seminar was being organised by Kakatiya University department of social work in association with Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi, ICSSR Southern Region and the TSCHE.

Providing water for agriculture and drinking water needs has been the main priority before the State government. That was why the government has taken up flagship programems Mission Kakatiya and Mission Bhagiratha.

The tanks of Telangana have the storage capacity of 265 TMC. Under Mission Kakatiya, repairs of about 9,000 tanks in villages were taken up each year and in the third year of its operation farmers were happy as there were copious rains, which filled the tanks to the brim, the Government Advisor explained.

According to him, Mission Kakatiya has received national and international recognition. American Universities like Michigan and Chicago Universities along with Central Irrigation department have sent teams to study its implementation.

Delivering the keynote address, Osmania University Sociology Department Prof C Ganesh felt that Mission Kakatiya aimed at ensuring irrigation and agriculture development would also reduce poverty and migration, generate employment and improve exports. The programmes could change the face of the villages, he added.

The KU Vice-Chancellor Prof R Sayanna said that the tanks in Telangana were neglected in the combined state of AP. For the success of Mission Kakatiya, effective water management was crucial, he pointed out.

The seminar Director Prof T Srinivas, professors K Ramanuja Rao, Ch Uma Mohan, M Hanumantha Rao and N Ramulu, Intach district convener Prof M Panduranga Rao, GWMC councillor Jorika Ramesh and others were present.
