Warangal: Congress workers and leaders have taken into streets staging protests and burning effigies as part of the nation-wide ‘Aakrosh Diwas’, observed against the Centre’ demonetisation of currency.

Separate protests were staged by the district Congress, Warangal (West) and Warangal (East) units here on Monday. The district Congress president N Rajender Reddy led a protest in Hanamkonda at Ambedkar Centre and burnt an effigy of PM Narendra Modi.

In another protest, the party Warangal (West) in-charge Errabelli Swarna has led a rally shouting slogans against the Central government and displaying Rs 500 currency notes and burnt an effigy of Modi at Kaloji Junction in Hanamkonda.

Speaking on the occasion, the leaders complained that the demonetisation of currency has put the common public to severe hardships. But the BJP-led Centre has not initiated any measure to offer relief to the suffering public, they complained.

The local police have arrested Rajender Reddy, Swarna, the city Congress president K Srinivas Rao, TPCC general secretaries Bakka Judson, Namindla Srinivas, secretaries EV Srinivas Rao, B Srinivas, Veesam Surender Reddy and others and released them later.

Cong protest turns tense The protest led by city Congress working president Rajanala Srihari at Warangal Chowrastha has turned tense as a large number of BJP workers clashed with Congress workers, in a bid to stop burning of PM’s effigy.

Intezargunj police intervened, arrested and took the protesting Congress workers to the police station. Speaking to press persons on the occasion, Srihari complained though they were staging the protest in a peaceful manner, the BJP workers led by their leader Ch Sunil have created a scene by disrupting the protest.

The police instead of acting against the BJP men have arrested the Congress workers, they alleged.“For the past 15 days the common people are subjected to untold miseries due to the mindless and unprepared act of withdrawing Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes. Now the BJP workers not allowing the opposition to express their dissent,” he alleged.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, who initially opposed the Centre’s move, later became silent to protect his interests and convert the black money he hoarded into legal currency. Both the PM Modi and the CM KCR have lost their trust among the public, Srihari pointed out.
