Students oppose proposal for private varsities
The activists of a joint action committee (JAC) comprising of student organisations such as PDSU, SFI, AISF, ABSF, MSF, BSF, TVV, DSU and AISB have staged a dharna in front of the Deputy CM’s residence at Teachers’ Colony.
Hanamkonda: Tension prevailed in Hanamkonda on Thursday as a large group of student activists laid siege to Deputy Chief Minister K Srihari’s residence, opposing the proposal to allow private universities in the State.
The activists of a joint action committee (JAC) comprising of student organisations such as PDSU, SFI, AISF, ABSF, MSF, BSF, TVV, DSU and AISB have staged a dharna in front of the Deputy CM’s residence at Teachers’ Colony.
The police have arrested nearly 40 protestors. The agitating students resisted the arrest and jostled with police leading to tense moments. However the police overpowered the students and took them to Subedari police station.
Speaking to press persons on the occasion, the Students JAC leaders demanded the government immediate withdrawal of its decision to allow private universities in Telangana.
They strongly objected reported plans by the government to introduce a bill in the ensuing assembly session allowing private varsities.
The JAC leaders B Narasimha Rao, Ch Srikanth, N Ashok Stalin, E Vijay Khanna, Manda Naresh, Sathish Madiga, I Anil, D Naresh and others demanded the CM K Chandrashekar Rao to quit his post for adopting anti-student policies.
It was the sacrifices made by student community that helped the CM to gain power in the State. It was shameful that the CM, who promised to provide free KG to PG education to all, was now going to promote private players in the higher education field, they criticised.
By allowing private universities, the TRS government was plotting to deprive the poor, SC/ST/BC and minority sections from receiving higher education, the JAC leaders alleged while questioning rationale behind encouraging corporate forces in the field of higher education.
“The government, which failed to develop the existing universities in the State, was now going ahead to make higher education a business activity by inviting corporate entities like Reliance, Tata, Birla and Mahindra to set up universities in Telangana,” said Narasimha Rao.
The government has to face serious consequences if it fails to withdraw the decision. The students in Telangana have chased away Seemandhra rulers with their collective agitations.
The TRS government would meet the same fate, the JAC leaders warned.They called upon the student community to get ready for militant agitations. The PDSU state leaders P Yakaiah, D Saraiah, N Ravinder, K Sandeep and others were present.
