Hanamkonda: Special efforts need to be made by both academics and common people to protect the endangered plant species, suggested Kakatiya University Registrar Prof K Purushotham.

He addressed the valedictory of a two-day workshop on ‘Plant taxonomy-current challenges and perspectives’ organised by the university department of botany here on Tuesday. Expressing concern at the extinction of rare and precious plant species, he wanted the plant scientists to come up with effective solutions to address the issue.

The department head M Surekha and the workshop convener Md Mustafa explained the objectives of the workshop. They said it was organised to help the faculty and students at both faculty and students to throw light on the latest developments in plant taxonomy.

Mustafa informed that eight lectures by eminent scholars in the field were conducted. Senior plant scientists Dr RR Rao, Dr M Sanjappa, retired Prof VS Raju and others delivered lectures. The department faculty Prof A Ragan, Prof Sammaiah, Prof T Ravinder Reddy, V Krishna Reddy, B Laitha Kumari, T Christopher, OU Prof Karunakar Reddy and others were present.
