The DLSA organised awareness meeting for the representatives of labour unions on the welfare schemes by the governments for the benefit of labourers in unorganised sector, in Hanamkonda on Wednesday.
Addressing the gathering, she said the authority has also been making special efforts to take the benefits to the workers in the sector. There were nearly four lakh labourers engaged in unorganised sector in erstwhile Warangal district.
Saying that the authority would extend free legal assistance to the labourers, the DLSA secretary noted that programmes to create awareness on the benefits offered by the Telangana Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board would be taken up.
Though there were four lakh labourers, only one lakh labourers have registered their names with the board. Steps should be taken to enroll the remaining labourers with the board by paying a nominal fee of Rs 110. It helps to receive compensation from the board in the case of accidents at work place, she noted.
The labour department and the labour unions should make collective efforts in that direction. The DLSA would be ready to support efforts by the department and the unions in educating the labourers, Christiana said.
She also appealed the journalists to register their names with the welfare schemes being implemented by the State government.
Assistant Labour Commissioner Ramesh Babu informed that any labourer if registers his name with the board by paying Rs 110 could derive benefits for a period of five years. If a labourer accidentally dies at workplace, his family would be given a compensation of Rs 6 lakh.
Similarly, the labourers would be given Rs 5 lakh in the case of permanent physical disability and could get Rs 4 lakh in the case of partial disability due to the accidents.
Besides, an assistance of Rs 90, 000 would be given towards conducting final rites in the case of natural death, he noted. So far Rs 23 crores of financial benefit was provided to nearly 7809 labourers’ families, he added.
