Warangal Congress leaders held ahead of Chalo Assembly
Large numbers of Congress workers and leaders across erstwhile Warangal district were taken into preventive custody by police on Thursday in the wake of ‘Chalo Assembly’ protest called by the party.
Warangal: Large numbers of Congress workers and leaders across erstwhile Warangal district were taken into preventive custody by police on Thursday in the wake of ‘Chalo Assembly’ protest called by the party.
The police have taken the leaders into their custody from their homes, offices and while they were boarding trains and buses to reach the state capital to take part in the protest on Friday.
The district Congress president N Rajender Reddy, TPCC secretaries EV Srinivas Rao, B Srinivas Rao and others were arrested at Vishal Bhavan, the party presidents’ office in Hanamkonda. They were taken to Hanamkonda police station.
City Congress working president Rajanala Srihari was detained at Warangal railway station while he along with 70 party workers going to board a train to reach Hyderabad. They were taken to Intezargung police station.
Similar arrests have taken place at Narsampet, Parkal, Jangaon, Bhupalpally, Wardhannapet, Mahabubabad and others places. The police have set up check posts on all the roads leading to Hyderabad and taken several Congress workers into custody.
Meanwhile, the vehicle inspections at Pembarthy on Warangal-Hyderabad highway in Jangaon district led to traffic jams, which caused severe inconvenience to the commuters. More than 700 leaders were said to have been arrested by the police by late evening hours.
Condemning the arrests of Congress leaders, Rajender Reddy and Srihari accused the TRS government of suppressing opposition parties in the state. It was the duty of opposition parties to fight for the rights of the people.
The party was demanding the government to protect interests of the farmers. What was wrong with that? All the arrested Congress workers must be released immediately and allow them to participate in the protest, they said.
