Kottayam MGU team bags champions’ trophy

The teams from Kerala universities have claimed first three places in the four-day South Zone Inter University Handball tournament for Women-2017 held at Kakatiya University. The team from Mahatma Gandhi University of Kottayam has bagged the champions’ trophy, while the team of The University of Calicut was the runner’ up and Kannur University stood at third place.

Hanamkonda: The teams from Kerala universities have claimed first three places in the four-day South Zone Inter University Handball tournament for Women-2017 held at Kakatiya University. The team from Mahatma Gandhi University of Kottayam has bagged the champions’ trophy, while the team of The University of Calicut was the runner’ up and Kannur University stood at third place.

The team of the host Kakatiya University stood at fourth place. The tournament, which began on last Friday, was concluded on Monday. Prize distribution ceremony took place at the KU play fields where the university Registrar Prof K Purushotham presented trophies to the teams that stood at first, second, third and fourth places.

The Registrar extended greetings to the winning team and asked the participants to take winning or losing in a sportive manner. He congratulated the organisers for conducting the tournament in a smooth manner. The teams that stood at first, second, third and fourth places would be taking part in Inter Zonal Inter University Handball tournament for Women-2017 to be held from December 17 to 20 at Lovely Professional University, Jalandhar in Punjab, the KU Sports Board secretary and South Zone tournament organsing secretary Gade Pani informed.

Teams from 45 universities from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, with more than 700 players took part in the tournament at KU. Matches were conducted on knock out basis. AK Tarzan of Islamic University of Science and Technology, Jammu and Kashmir is the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) observer.

Telangana State Handball Association President S Pavan Kumar, Physical Directors Association president Prof P Ramesh Reddy, dean (education) and controller of examinations Prof S Mahender Reddy, PRO V Krishnamacharya and others were present at the prize distribution ceremony.
