Warangal: Congress ranks have taken to streets across the erstwhile Warangal district on Tuesday, protesting against the Assembly Speaker S Madhusudhana Chary’s action against the party legislators.

At several places, Congress activists burnt the effigies of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, condemning the expulsion of two MLAs, suspension of six MLCs and 11 MLAs including the Leader of the Opposition K Jana Reddy for the entire budget session of the Assembly.

A large number of party workers led by the district Congress president N Rajender Reddy have staged a dharna displaying black flags and shouting slogans at the party district headquarters at Hanamkonda chowrastha.

Former chief whip G Venkata Ramana Reddy, ex-mayor Errabelli Swarna, ex-MLA K Sridhar, city Congress working president K Srinivas Rao, TPCC general secretary N Srinivas and others joined the protest. The protesting leaders were arrested and taken to Hanamkonda police station.

Speaking to the press, they complained that the Speaker at the behest of the CM had punished the party legislators in an undemocratic manner for highlighting the TRS government’s failures during the last four years. It was nothing but an insult to the public in Telangana.

Expelling MLAs Komatireddy Venkat Reddy and SA Sampath Kumar and suspending the MLAs and MLCs along with the Leader of the Opposition was aimed to run the business of the House as per the whims and fancies of the ruling party, complained Rajender Reddy and Ramana Reddy.

They accused the CM of staging a drama wherein the State Legislative Council Chairman K Swamy Goud got admitted to a hospital following an eye injury when Venkat Reddy thrown headphones at him during the Governor’s address.

The Council Chairman was well and good until he sends off the Governor and there were apprehensions whether Swamy Goud was really injured. It was not proper to make use him to create the unwanted drama, Congress leaders said.

In a statement, the city Congress working president Rajanala Srihari challenged the CM Chandrashekar Rao to dissolve the Assembly and go for elections if he had courage. The TRS legislators too had made much ruckus in the Assembly when they were in the Opposition, he said.

It was a practice to suspend the MLAs for a few days when they create trouble in the House. But expelling the MLAs and suspending for entire session of the House was unwarranted, Srihari noted. Similar protests were held at Jangaon, Bhupalpally, Mahabubabad, Parkal and other places.
