Karimnagar: The drunken driving inspections, being conducted at various locations under Karimnagar Commissionerate limits are making the alcoholics panic, said Commissioner of Police V B Kamalasan Reddy.

In a statement released here on Wednesday, he said that drunk and drive checking has it impact over the people from the time of its inception under the Commissionerate limits.

Earlier the number of accidents were more due to drunken driving. But the number has been reduced drastically due to vigorous police checking. Saying that people of all sections have extended their support and cooperation for conducting the check-ups successfully under commissionerate limits, he thanked them all.

The people were informing the police about persons, who were consuming alcohol in open places and also about rash driving and bike riding competitions that were being held on the city outskirts.

The Commissioner informed that as many as 6,867 drunk and drive cases were lodged till March 12 for the past three years under the commissionerate limits. Out of this, 4,938 accused have paid penalty; about 1,197 members were imprisoned as punishment; and about 347 persons were told to do sramadanam as punishment. Another 401 cases were in pending.

Several awareness programmes are being conducted for the people and to college students about the bad effects of drinking and driving along with organising counselling sessions for parents and children, who were caught under drunk and drive and rash driving drives.

The Commissioner of Police said that for the safety of the people several other programmes are also taken up under commissionerate limits.
