KLIP, an emerging attraction on River Godavari banks
The historic Kaleshwara Mukteswara Swamy Temple, known as ‘Dakshina Triveni Sangamam’, the State’s popular pilgrimage centre on the banks of River Godavari has yet another attraction emerging.

Being constructed across River Godavari, Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP), which holds the key to the TRS government’s promise of ensuring irrigation facility to one crore acres, has become the centre of attraction and drawing visitors from all over the country.
Just to witness the mammoth scale at which the works are going on, top bureaucrats, elected representatives, ministers, farmers are frequenting the project site and besides regular visits by the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao, for whom it is a prestigious project.
Began in 2016 with an estimated cost of Rs 80,500 crore, the project aims to store about 148 tmc feet water with an objective of utilising 180 tmc feet water by lifting at least two tmc feet water every day for 90 flood days.
It is designed to irrigate over 18.47 lakh acres in erstwhile districts of Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Warangal, Medak, Nalgonda and Ranga Reddy. One of the unique features of KLIP is the longest tunnel to carry water in Asia, with a stretch of 81 kilometres between Yellampally barrage and Mallannasagar reservoir.
The CM intended to develop KLIP as a tourist attraction after its completion; however, it assumed such a status even before it is completed. Governor ESL Narasimhan and his wife Vimala Narasimhan, Jharkhand former CM Hemanth Soren, Union Ministry of Environment and Forest secretary C K Mishra and 15th Finance Commission secretary Arvind Mehta are those visited the project, since January.
It may be recalled that the Governor, who thoroughly impressed with the project, wanted to call the CM ‘Kaleshwaram Chandrashekar Rao’, while the others appreciated the State government for its efforts in executing the project that will boost the State's economy.
A host of elected representatives from Nizamabad district the site and nearly 1,500 farmers from Husnabad Assembly constituency too visited it. Not to be left behind, a group of journalists from Hyderabad visited the KLIP site on Saturday as part of tour organised by the State police.
A senior official KRK Prasada Rao explained them the project significance as well as the security measures being taken up there. The police set up a CRPF base camp at the project site in view of the visits by VIPs, the official added.
“I have never seen anywhere such a mega project being executed on an enormous scale. It is said to speed the works every day about two lakh bags of cement is being used in construction.” a senior journalist, Vikram Rao Kulkarni told The Hans India.
While the CM is monitoring the progress of works live through video streaming from the work spots with the help of high resolution cameras installed at the site, Minister Harish Rao is often doing rounds of the project site, sometimes surprise night-shift inspections.
