GWMC demolition drive: Residents stage protests

The corporation’s demolition team had recently arrived at Brindavan Colony and started knocking down newly laid concrete slabs of three under construction houses.
The team withdrew the demolition drive temporarily as the resident staged protests.
However, the residents are worried over the fate of their houses with the GWMC deciding to remove the houses falling under full tank level (FTL) of Bhadrakali tank near historic Bhadrakali Temple.
There are many colonies approved by KUDA in the area with nearly 1,200 houses, said the president of Bhadrakali Tankbund Area Samithi, Marri Ravinder.
Speaking to The Hans India on Friday, he revealed that in the year 1996, the principal secretary (MAUD) Arvind Kumar, former commissioner of Warangal Municipal Corporation, proposed construction of a bund around Bhadrakali tank.
The colonies residents contributed Rs 70 lakh, fifty per cent of the cost of the bund construction while KUDA contributed 20 per cent and the municipal corporation contributed remaining 30 per cent, he said and added that the land owners gave assurance of getting permissions to construct houses.
Following that several colonies have come up. Later in 2013, in view of a Supreme Court order that wanted all constructions under FTL removed the district administration fixed FTL boundary stones inside the colonies much against the rules, Ravinder complained.
The issue is taken to the notice of MAUD principal secretary who in turn has written a letter to GWMC Commissioner V P Gautham asking to address the matter.
Deputy Chief Minister K Srihari also assured to give exemption to FTL rule to Bhadrakali and other tanks in the city that are taken up for beautification, he said.
The corporation’s officials are creating panic among the colonies’ residents by sending demolition teams to pull down under construction houses.
The officials issued notices on May 18 and started demolition on the next day without giving the chance to respond to the notices, alleged city Congress working president Rajanala Srihari who inspected the colonies.
He and the residents complained that the TRS leaders and GWMC officials are targeting those who failed to pay bribe to them.
The corporation must stop its action of demolishing the houses in the colonies, they demanded.
