Dancing Away the Blues

Kuchipudi dancer JVSNSK Padma Priya’s journey in the world of dance had many ups and downs but her passion for this art form has just grown with time

When did you start learning the dance?
My dance journey began when I was 7-year-old (2nd grade). My mother had a great interest in classical dance and she encouraged me to learn Kuchipudi. I started learning the basics in my school from Renuka ma’am. As time went on, ma’am told my parents that I should learn this dance form professionally and that’s when I met Sri Uday sir. My journey of dance had many ups and downs with several injuries, but my teachers were always there to support me and my passion for this art form has just grown with time.

Why is dance important to you?
Dance is a form of expression. Dance is the best way to express a person’s emotions, to portray a story and a way of keeping oneself fit. I’ve always loved dancing since the time I was a baby. I know myself more through dance and I feel so much better when I dance. It also taught me how to be patient and dedicated to dance is not an easy art form. It requires devotion.

What is your take on classical dance in today’s world?
In my opinion, classical dance is a very prestigious art form which people in the modern times only take up if they have dedication towards it. It is one of the toughest art forms to learn and being able to learn and perform is no joke. I would love to see more people learning this art form so that it stays alive in the modern world.

Few words about your guru!
Sri Uday and Smt. Renuka are accomplished performers, choreographers and dedicated Gurus in the field of Kuchipudi dance. They both have thoroughly learned every nuance of this art form with the guidance of the legendary Guru late Dr Vempati Chinna Satyam Garu. I’ve been learning dance from them in the past 12 years now.
