I study Intermediate second year in Biology, Physics and Chemistry and I want to know the prospects of a nursing career and also the colleges in AP that offer Bsc in nursing. -Sreelekshmi Pinniti, Neredmet
Nursing, considered as one of the noblest profession involves taking care of patients suffering from all sorts of physical and psychological maladies, assisting medical specialists, helping set up medical equipment in operation theatres and clinical laboratories and other general activities. This requires lot of patience, courage, a service mentality and also a readiness to work for extra hours even night shifts.
A BSc in nursing is a very good option as there is a great demand for highly skilled nurses, but what is more advisable is to acquire a specialisation by choosing any post basic specialty (one-year diploma) courses on offer, such as: Cardio Thoracic Nursing, Critical Care Nursing, Emergency and Disaster Nursing, Neonatal Nursing, Neuro Nursing, Nursing Education and Administration, Oncology Nursing, Operation Room Nursing, Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Nursing, Practitioner in Midwifery, Psychiatric Nursing, etc. If interested in higher studies you can go for MSc followed by MPhil and PhD.
With the rapid growth in the population coupled with the requirement for better healthcare facilities, there is an unending demand for nurses in the country. The supply is falling short the demand. Nurses easily get jobs in private and Government run hospitals, nursing homes, orphanages, old age homes, industries, sanatoriums and the armed forces.
They also can seek employment in the Indian Red Cross Society, Indian Nursing Council, State Nursing Councils and various other nursing institutions or can also take up administrative and teaching positions in medical colleges and nursing schools. Apart from these domestic sector openings, you can earn an international nursing certificate and move on to greener pastures. India has emerged as the largest provider of nurses to foreign countries.
