NLP is an approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy. A This technique teaches us how to make neurology, language and programming work together and be more productive win2Each one of us has at one time or another tried to change our life-style, mindset; quit a habit; but very few of us have been successful. The reason may be either lack of motivation, confidence or determination. Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is a novel method that can help you. NLP is an approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy created in the 1970s. It's a connection between the neurological processes 'neuro', language 'linguistic' and behavioural patterns that have been learned through experience 'programming' and can be organised to achieve specific goals in life. The name encompasses three most influential components involved in producing human experience: neurology, language and programming.
Presuppositions of NLP
NLP is based on what has been termed 'presuppositions'. Presupposition is what is 'presupposed' that they are true and we take them as guidelines defining our day-to-day actions. These are age old beliefs that were created by ancestors. They made people feel the need to obey these presuppositions if they want to achieve success. NLP presuppositions are foundations for achieving success.
The map is not the territory
The way we represent the world refers to reality but it isn't reality in itself. It is our perception. For example when we see the map of India we believe that India is in the shape shown in the map, but it may not be true. We respond to our internalised map of reality. Only when mental maps and interpretations are update the world can change. Positive intention behind every behaviour
Every harmful, hurtful or helpful behaviour has a positive purpose in its original situation. When we are changing unwanted behaviours or habits, and moving towards healing, it is necessary to find the deep structure or original intention behind the behaviour. No failure, only feedback Every failure is a learning opportunity to find out what works and what doesn't work. It is important to separate behaviour from identity. When something doesn't go per plan, we tend to consider it as a failure, we then get depressed, worried, guilty, but if we see the situation as feedback rather than failure, success is yours like scientists who have failed many a times before they tasted the success.
People have all the resources they need
NLP teaches how to access these resources at appropriate times and places. This assumption opens up possibilities. Resources mean the internal responses and external behaviours needed to get a desired response. Often people have resources that they haven't considered or are available in other contexts. Maybe you know someone who shows good leadership skills at work but can't manage his or her children.
Every behaviour is useful in some context
Every behaviour is valuable somewhere at some time. Anger is useful when someone is attacked. It may not however be useful or gain the desired result. We adopt certain behaviour, it's because once upon a time it worked which is more likely to re-enforce that old behaviour rather than driving it out. The most effective solution is to find a new, more appropriate behaviour rather than holding a lengthy, pointless post mortem over the old behaviour
You cannot not communicate
Communication does not mean talking confidently or showing gestures. Even if you're attempting to not speak, you're communicating. If one can do something, everyone can One of the key activities in NLP is the modelling of people who are recognised as being excellent in some field of activity in such a way as to identify as role models. Many people gain success by imitating them. The person imitating must have the necessary aptitude, and be will to learn effectively.
Meaning of your communication is the response you get
Communication gives a message to the listener. The result is the response we elicit. That response may not necessarily match what we intended to communicate. The pre-supposition is that people will respond to what they think you mean, which may not be accurate at times. Communication is not the whole message. The value of this pre-supposition is that it points out that if we want people to respond appropriately we need to talk to them perfectly rather than just assuming that they have understood you.
Change makes Change
It is a common saying that 'The only person whom you can really change is yourself'. NLP says that changing your own behaviour inevitably has an effect on the people around you. The underlying notion, derived from the field of cybernetics, is that when one element within a system changes, the whole system must change to adapt to that new change. Mind and body are parts of same system
Body and our mind are separate entities. On the contrary, our thoughts instantly act upon our muscles, breathing and feelings and these in turn affect our thoughts. Interestingly, there is no such organ like mind in our body. Our thinking is our mind. Since NLP is something new, a new way of looking at the life differently, let's apply the above beliefs which can lead to a new and profound ways of creating change in our lives.
