The format of the discussion saw the offline panelists presenting their views while experts from Germany reflected on their views via internet. Dr Raman stressed on five 'C's namely connect, communicate, commune, collaborate and co-create knowledge, while Dr Batra opined to distinguish between authentic information and false notes present on the Internet.

Madan Muthu called social media 'crowd sourcing of ideas' and gave the example of Pollymath Project which in 2009 saw collaboration of many mathematicians to solve one problem posted by Tim Gower on his blog which he found no solution to. Strong comments came from Dr Muthu: "Social media is a product of the web which a scientist invented. It should be used more than uploading photos and not just be identified with just Facebook. It can be a platform for communication between scientists and interaction between scientists and the public."
