In an attempt to promote research activity in science and allied fields, the Ministry of Human Resource Development has invited proposals for establishing Centres of Excellence for Training and Research in Frontier Areas of Science and Technology (FAST).

The pre-requisite of the scientific research in the centre is expected to contribute significantly to national development goals and to building a robust research culture in the institution. “A lot more research scholars are necessary for the overall development in various fields and also to cater the needs of the 21st century” a senior official of MHRD said.

“Priority will be accorded to multidisciplinary research and training in new and emerging technologies in thematic areas such as energy, water, environment, smart materials that promote sustainable development” he explained. The proposed centres will be located on the campuses of the existing institutions and will be provided grant-in-aid up to Rs. 4 crore per centre depending on the feasibility of the proposal.

The Ministry has asked interested institutions to submit proposals indicating existing institutional capacity in terms of experience levels, recognition of excellence, academic and financial resources, national and international research networks and partnerships. The last date for submission is September 15.
