Manipal University, has been awarded the highest rank in the Webometrics Ranking among the private education institutions in India. The varsity ranks ahead of India’s other premiere institutes like AIIMS-Delhi, IIT-Guwahati, BITS-Pilani, NIT-Rourkela, IIM-Ahmedabad and IIM- Bangalore.

The Webometrics Ranking of the World Universities ranks the university websites world-wide and is one of the critical measures tracked by top universities to measure themselves in the digital space. Speaking on this achievement Dr. H Vinod Bhat, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Manipal University said “With the change in the trends, digital medium has become the core focus for universities across the globe. The Webometrics Ranking is yet another affirmation of Manipal University’s online focus that is fuelled by new website and greater research output. ”

The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is a ranking system that is based on a composite indicator that takes into account the volume of the web content, the visibility and impact of these web publications and the traffic they receive. Among the 1604 institutions across India that were evaluated by Webometrics, Manipal University has ascended to the 16th position from its previous rank of 27 in July 2012. The University has been ranked 1830 among approximately 20,000 other universities world-wide that were evaluated.

The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigations Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain. The aim of the Ranking is to improve the presence of the academic and research institutions on the Web and to promote the open access publication of scientific results.
