Around 495 seats are lying vacant in University of Hyderabad. One of the prestigious Universities in the country is unable to find eligible students in many Masters and PhD courses. Ambedkar Student Association (ASA) called for a campus bandh on Thursday in UoH demanding to fill the all 495 vacant seats in Masters, Integrated, and PhD courses.

Morning session classes have been cancelled in several departments due to the bandh on Wednesday. ASA along with students blocked the main gate of campus demanding the Vice chancellor to give an assurance of filling vacant seats.

Prashanth, President of ASA said that, the admission process was over long ago, yet there are many seats which are vacant. “We have requested the administration to fill the vacant seats many a times. But there is no response to our request from them. We demand VC to fill all those seats by OBC candidates who are in waiting list.”

Responding to the protest Prof Ramakrishna Ramaswamy, Vice Chancellor, UoH said that “the seats are vacant, because there are no eligible candidates available in to join some courses. We too are working hard to fill those seats. In fact we have filled 76 per cent of seats this year. There is a consistent increase in the number of seats filled every year.”

Students were not convinced by VC’s response and refused to stop the protest until they get a written assurance from the administration for filling all vacant seats and proper implementation of OBC reservations in admissions. Students said that University has not conducted second counselling for many courses. Second and spot counselling was conducted only for main list candidates. No waiting list was released for many courses.

After discussing with the officials Vice Chancellor has given a letter signed by Registrar Prof B Raja Shekar which said all vacant seats in Masters and Integrated courses will be filled by August 31, 2013. VC said that a special entrance test for PhD courses would be conducted in the month of December. “We will also upload the third waiting list on University’s web site in few days. Considering the request by students we will make sure that OBC reservations will be implemented properly,” he added
