“Character, work ethic, basic intelligence, dedication to fulfill commitments and values – these are mostly what employers look for in prospective employees, because these are hard to teach”, said KJA Swaroop, GM (HR), ITC. He addressed the MBA students as part of the panel discussion on honing employability skills conducted by Hyderabad Business School (HBS), a constituent of GITAM University, in association with National Institute of Personnel Management (NIPM) on Thursday at HBS Campus, Hyderabad.

Swaroop gave a detailed presentation on what a typical employer would like in a candidate being interviewed. Candidate should be presentable, confident, sensitive, and aware of their strengths and weaknesses and, above all, be very human. To be successful in an interview, one needs the right kind of preparation and a cool mind. He dwelt at length on two of the most frequently asked questions, on family background and extra-curricular activities. He showed how one’s response to these questions would tell the employer about your team-spirit, curiosity, attitude of learning etc.
Dr. C Srinagesh, Head, Training Division, Infosys, demonstrated role plays and interaction with the students present as to how an employee would be appraised in an organisation. He exhorted the students not to limit their dreams and attempts to small jobs but to aspire to be entrepreneurs. B Phaneendra Kumar, Additional GM, BHEL, spoke about the objectives of NIPM and invited the students to become members of NIPM and derive its benefits.
