Hyderabad: The campus of University of Hyderabad (UoH) was abuzz on Thursday with students making a beeline at various centres in the varsity to exercise their franchise at the ongoing Students Unions polls.

The elections were conducted peacefully and no security lapses or malpractices were reported. The polls started around 10 am and concluded at 5.30 pm. The results of the election will be announced on Friday night. In all about 80 per cent of the total votes were polled for the six positions in the Students Union.

“We are contesting for all the posts in the polls,” says Jaan Basheer, a member of SFI and a research scholar.

The student parties that contested for the elections are Students Federation of India (SFI), National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), Ambedkar Students Association (ASA), Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Bahujan Students Front (BSF), Tribal Students Forum (TSF), and Telangana Rashtra Samithi Vidyarthi Vibhagham (TRSV).

United Democratic Alliance (UDA) was formed by merging -ASA, BSF, TSF and NSUI

The agenda of many students organisation was more or less common, with student leaders promising to resolve issues like better hostel facilities, a north Indian mess, separate library at south campus, scrapping development fees for professional courses and the early entrance exam of UoH, rooms for visiting parents at the varsity guest house, reintroduction of central purchasing committee to contain corruption in the mess, ending all types of discrimination, varsity press for publication of students’ research articles and funding for research scholars for a seminar abroad, etc.
