Farmers up in arms over Kakinada SEZ
Farmers in Kakinada special economic zone (SEZ) are up in arms once again. They are putting up spirited resistance to the efforts by officials to kick start works in the SEZ located at Kothamulapet under Kothapalli mandal. A found stone was laid to build a computer training centre and toys manufacturing unit in the SEZ three days.
Agriculturists demand that no development work be taken up until their concerns are addressed
Kakinada: Farmers in Kakinada special economic zone (SEZ) are up in arms once again. They are putting up spirited resistance to the efforts by officials to kick start works in the SEZ located at Kothamulapet under Kothapalli mandal. A found stone was laid to build a computer training centre and toys manufacturing unit in the SEZ three days. Road laying work also began in the area by deploying earth moving equipment and road roller.
The farmers resorted to agitation as the works on projects were launched without addressing the concerns voiced by them. The agitation is being launched under the leadership of Kakinada Special Economic Zone Struggle Committee. The farmers recalled that N Chandrababu Naidu, when was opposition leader, had visited the villages and promised to return the lands to them, if he was elected.
The Struggle Committee alleged that Kakinada Special Economic Zone (KSEZ) management had paid compensation at the rate of just Rs 3 lakh per an acre. But the management had borrowed Rs 20 lakh from bank by pledging each acre of the land snatched from the farmers, the committee pointed out.
The KESZ management even put the lands for sale at the rate of Rs 70 lakh an acre. The committee demanded that a CBI inquiry be ordered into entire issue of forming SEZ. Meanwhile, a section of people tried to counter the agitation launched by farmers, alleging that a conspiracy was hatched to sabotage industrialisation. The industrialisation would provide jobs to youth, said those opposed the agitation by farmers. With agitation and counter agitation, tension built up in the SEZ.
