An Se-young Makes Badminton History With 47th Title, Surpasses Susi Susanti’s Record
South Korean shuttler An Se-young has created history by winning her 47th international women’s singles title at the Denmark Open, surpassing the long-standing record held by Indonesian badminton great Susi Susanti.
It took the world number one to reach the milestone on Sunday after a nail-biting three-game conclusion in Odense, Denmark against Japan's Akane Yamaguchi. An overcame her loss in the opening game to take her second in a row Denmark Open titles, with a victory of 21-23, 21-14, 21-18.
An Se-young breaks a long-standing record
With the victory, the 24-year-old moved past Susanti’s tally of 46 international titles. The Indonesian legend had held the record since her retirement in 1997, making An’s achievement a landmark moment in women’s badminton.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed the new record, noting that its tally excludes titles won at regional games and is based on records maintained since 1989.
Comeback victory despite injury scare
An’s historic triumph came despite an ankle scare during the tournament. She showed resilience in the final, recovering from a narrow first-game defeat to dominate the second and maintain her composure in the decider.
The victory also extended her remarkable run against Yamaguchi, whom she has defeated in several major finals this season.
A dominant season for the world number one
It's been an outstanding 2026 for An with multiple wins on the BWF World Tour as well as on the team and individual stages. She has also been world number one for over 100 weeks.
Her record-breaking effort will further cement her place among the greats of badminton history and one more milestone in a career that is characterised by consistency, determination and high-level performances.
An has said that she's breaking records to motivate her, but that she's taking things one match at a time.
