Goyat-Pettis boxing showdown set for Jan 23
Hyderabad: Indian boxer Neeraj Goyat and former UFC lightweight champion Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis came face to face for the first time in Hyderabad on Friday ahead of their high-profile professional boxing bout scheduled for January 23, 2027.
Promoted by the Indian Pro Boxing League (IPBL) in association with the Indian Boxing Council (IBC) and Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), the contest is being billed as the biggest professional boxing event ever staged in India.
Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Chennai are in contention to host the fight, with the final venue, ticketing and broadcast details expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
MVP co-founder Jake Paul, in a surprise video message, expressed his preference for Chennai, citing its boxing history. He recalled Muhammad Ali’s exhibition bout at the city’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in January 1980.
Goyat, India’s first boxer signed by MVP, said he was determined to defend his reputation on home soil. Pettis, a former UFC champion and IPBL co-owner, expressed confidence in his experience.
IPBL CEO and co-founder Akshar Madhavaram said the event would mark a major milestone for Indian boxing. All bouts will be IBC-sanctioned to WBC standards.
