We find many young people turn to AI chatbots for emotional support; unlike the traditional search engines, AI companies are mostly created to hold conversations and simulate personal relationships. This can make them feel like friends who are always available to listen.
Children as well as teenagers who are dealing with loneliness, body image issues, bullying or emotional stress might find it easier to share their feelings with a chatbot.
However, if an AI chatbot responds with harmful advice instead of support, the consequences could be serious. The young users may not always understand that these systems can make mistakes or produce unsafe responses.
This does not mean that every AI chatbot is dangerous. However, it shows why the companies require strong safety measures, especially when their products can be used by the children.
The lawsuit alleges that Character AI’s products prioritised user engagement over children’s wellbeing and lacked adequate safety measures.
The company has earlier stated that user safety is our priority. The case follows other concerns about AI companies and their possible impact on young people.
In January 2026, Character AI and Google settled a lawsuit filed by the mother of a 14-year-old Florida boy who died of suicide after allegedly interacting with a Character AI chatbot.
As per new filing by Kentucky Attorney General Russel Coleman, Chatbots created by AI companion company Character. AI allegedly advised its users to harm themselves, starve themselves and even consider suicide.
All these allegations are part of a lawsuit against the company over child safety and the possible impact of its products on vulnerable users.
