Anthropic is restoring global access to its most advanced artificial intelligence models, Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5, after the U.S. government lifted the export restrictions that had blocked their launch outside the country last month. The company confirmed receiving notification from the U.S. Department of Commerce and stated it would begin restoring access starting July 1, ending a ban that lasted just over two weeks.

Restrictions on Anthropic’s two most powerful Claude models—Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5—were initially imposed on June 12 after the U.S. government raised national security concerns regarding these cutting-edge AI models. At the time, Anthropic was ordered to halt exports and transfers of Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 to foreign users unless it obtained a license. To comply with the order, the company suspended access for customers outside the U.S., including some of its own foreign-national employees.

Now, the company has announced that the restrictions have been lifted. In a post on X, Anthropic stated: "We have received notification that the Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5."

"We will begin restoring access tomorrow and will share updates soon. We thank our users for their patience and everyone who worked with us on the redeployment of the models." The decision to reverse the ban follows weeks of discussions between Anthropic and the Department of Commerce. According to U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, officials worked closely with the company to review the capabilities and risks associated with Fable 5 before deciding to lift the restrictions.

"Over the past two weeks, we have worked closely with Anthropic to analyze and approve Fable 5, ensuring alignment within the U.S. government and strengthening U.S. leadership in AI," Lutnick wrote on X.

Why were the models restricted? Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 are among Anthropic’s most capable AI systems. Built on the company’s Claude platform—which competes with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini—these models are designed to perform complex reasoning, write code, and solve sophisticated tasks.

Claude Fable 5 targets general users and developers, while Claude Mythos 5 was created for enterprise and cybersecurity use cases. Anthropic claims that Mythos can identify software vulnerabilities and help security teams detect weaknesses more efficiently. However, U.S. authorities were concerned that these same capabilities could be misused to discover and exploit security flaws if they fell into the wrong hands.

Another concern centered on reports of "jailbreak" techniques that reportedly allowed users to bypass some of the security protections built into Fable 5. Anthropic argued that the scope of such a vulnerability was limited and that similar techniques existed for other publicly available AI models. The company also maintained that the government had not identified any actual harm caused by the models.

Nevertheless, these concerns ultimately led the U.S. government to impose export restrictions and ask Anthropic to suspend access to the models from abroad.

Following the ban, Anthropic worked with the Trump administration for over two weeks to address these concerns. According to a letter obtained by U.S. media outlets, the company pledged to proactively detect and manage security risks, collaborate with the government on security protocols and standards for current and future AI models, and report any malicious activity related to this technology.
