Apple may be planning to expand the capabilities of its HomeView smart display by turning it into a home security camera. References discovered in the device's software suggest that the company is exploring features such as motion detection, live video streaming and video recording. The development was first reported by a famous publication, following a discovery made by a Reddit user.

Although Apple has not officially announced this functionality, the findings indicate that the company could use the HomeView's existing camera hardware for home surveillance through its HomeKit Secure Video platform. However, the feature is not currently active in the available software.

Hidden software code reveals security camera plans

According to a famous publication, Reddit user "pdfu" discovered references to a dedicated security camera mode in the HomeView Software 27.2 settings files. The hidden code reportedly includes options for motion detection, live streaming, video recording and privacy controls.

One of the setup screens reportedly contains the following message: "Your HomeView can be used as a security camera with HomeKit Secure Video."

These references suggest that Apple could introduce a new way for users to monitor their homes without purchasing a separate security camera.

HomeView already comes with a built-in camera

Apple unveiled its HomeView smart display during the "Welcome Home" event in October 2026. The device features a 7-inch display and a 12-megapixel camera designed primarily for FaceTime calls and facial recognition.

The camera can recognise different members of a household and display personalised information based on who is standing in front of the device. HomeView also works as a central control point for connected smart home products, allowing users to manage accessories, check security camera feeds and access Siri-powered features.

If the reported functionality arrives, the built-in camera could take on an additional role.

Privacy controls could be a major focus

The software references also point towards several privacy measures that Apple may introduce alongside the security camera feature.

Reportedly, only household members would be allowed to view the camera feed. The device could also display a visual warning and play a sound whenever someone accesses the live feed or starts recording. Other members of the household may receive notifications if security camera settings are changed.

The leaked code also suggests that users could customise camera activity based on different situations, including when they are at home, away or asleep. This would give users greater control over what the camera detects, streams or records.

Apple has not confirmed the feature

Apple has yet to confirm whether HomeView will officially support security camera functionality. The company could still be working on the feature and refining its privacy protections before making it available.

If introduced, the addition could make HomeView more useful within Apple's smart home ecosystem. It would also strengthen its position against competing smart displays that already offer home monitoring capabilities. For now, users will have to wait for an official announcement from Apple.
