Amazon Fire TV devices give you access to streaming services but the home screens on Amazon Fire TV often have advertisements, sponsored suggestions and apps that come preinstalled. One user however has found a way to make the Amazon Fire TV experience cleaner. By using an AI coding assistant this user redesigned the Amazon Fire TV interface. Added Anthropic’s Claude assistant, to the Amazon Fire TV device.

The experiment took place on a 2023 Fire TV Stick 4K (generation). This device runs Fire OS 8. A Mac was connected to the Wi-Fi network. The process involved using CleanYourTV. CleanYourTV is an open-source project. CleanYourTV is available, on GitHub. CleanYourTV helps remove software from Android TV and Fire TV devices. CleanYourTV works over Wi-Fi. CleanYourTV does not require root access. CleanYourTV does not require uninstalling system applications.

Preparing the Mac and Fire TV

The first step involved installing CleanYourTV and the necessary development tools on the Mac. Since Java and Homebrew were unavailable, the AI assistant downloaded Java 17 and Google's Android command-line tools. It also installed the required Android platform and build tools before successfully creating a 574 KB home-screen application.

The next instruction was simple: “Clean up my Fire TV, but keep Alexa’s features.”

After enabling ADB debugging, the assistant identified the television device and applied a cleanup list designed for that particular model. It disabled 43 Amazon packages covering tracking services, advertising features and unwanted applications.

These included telemetry, advertising IDs, sponsored previews, recommendation feeds, Live TV, Shopping, Amazon Music, Photos, Silk and Luna. After a restart essential feature such, as Wi‑Fi, Settings, Netflix and YouTube kept working.

A Minimalist Home Screen

The assistant then created a cleaner interface with a black background, no sponsored banners and a simple layout. The redesigned screen featured a clock, date, shortcuts for Inputs, Wi-Fi and Settings, along with a dock containing five streaming applications. Other installed apps appeared below in a grid.

Users can also return to the original setup by removing the launcher and Home Return helper, restoring disabled packages and switching off ADB debugging.

Claude Comes to Fire TV

One of the most interesting additions was Claude integration. The instruction was: “Add Claude as an assistant on the Fire TV that works across apps, without an API key.”

Instead of using an API key, the Mac handled the processing through Claude Code and a small relay server. The TV received a dedicated Claude panel that could open over other applications when the remote's Menu button was held.

The initial version struggled to understand video content because YouTube's interface did not provide readable screen text. The assistant rebuilt the application to capture screenshots and send them to Claude for better context.

Voice support also required a second attempt. Initially, users had to speak through a companion webpage on their phones. However, the assistant later integrated voice recording directly into the TV panel using the remote's microphone input.

The system uses Whisper, an open-source speech-recognition model, to convert speech into text before sending it to Claude. A test produced an exact transcript in 2.8 seconds, with responses available in languages including Hindi. However, testing with the physical remote was still pending.

The project demonstrates how AI coding assistants can help customise existing smart TV devices, offering a cleaner interface and additional features without replacing the original hardware.
