Hyderabad: With the onset of monsoon, the entomology wing of GHMC launched massive campaign to tackle mosquito menace "Keeping in mind the increased number of cases of dengue last year, the entomology wing has taken up massive ant-larval operations to tackle the issue.

Following the instruction from the higher ups during a review meeting held recently, we have increased the number of drives in South Zone areas," informed N Srinivas, Senior Entomologist, South Zone.

During the campaign, the official said, "We generally use a variety of insecticides to control mosquito population at different stages like adult mosquito control in residential localities, arresting mosquito larvae growth in polluted and fresh water bodies, mosquito breeding control in polluted water and mosquito larvae control in drains, nalas, lakes as well as water bodies.

Explaining that GHMC has identified 38 vulnerable localities in Charminar zone and it has divided into 36 divisions and 23 units together, he said, "Presently about 437 members have been deployed to tackle with stinging flies. We have constituted 19 anti-larvae units and 4 fogging units. Every unit consists of 19 members that include one supervisor to monitor the situation and attend the complaints," he explained.

All the 437 members are working under the constant supervision of 5 assistant entomologists. A total of 36 fogging machines and 126 knapsack sprayers are being in use to attend the calls. Besides, there are 11 Vehicle Mounted Fogging Machines (VMFMs) and 36 portable machines being used to dose down the mosquitoes. More so, deployment of one drone each for Khairatabad and Charminar Zone would help to hold campaign more affectively this time," he elaborated.

When asked whether the staff members were equipped sufficiently with the PPEs for protection from coronavirus spread, the official said, "Teams with specific task in containment zones have been provided with sufficient safety gears. The other members too would get the apparatus soon, as a tender for procuring of safety gears has been called."
