Hyderabad: The Old City is in a grip of corona cases and the number is growing at a fast rate with each passing day. According to the State Public Health and Family Welfare Department, a large number of cases are in the South Zone. Till date, 630 Covid-19 positive cases have been reported out of which 567 cases are active and 516 are quarantined at home.

"The Charminar Circle-9 has recorded large number of cases with around 187 positive cases and 142 containment homes, while Malakpet circle-6 remains with 143 cases and 123 containment homes," said an official.

Other circles in south zone witnessing less number cases include Santosh Nagar circle-6 with 95 positive cases and 76 quarantined houses, Falaknuma circle-10 remains with 89 cases. The Chandrayangutta circle-8 has reported 72 cases and 46 are confined to homes, while the Rajendranagar circle-11 has reported 44 cases and 40 are at house, official informed.

In a recent survey conducted by the city-based Healthcare NGO Helping Hand Foundation (HHF), one in three above the age 45 in the Old City has single or more than one health issue such as diabetes, hypertension etc making them highly vulnerable.

"The spread of the disease is rampant, while 85 percent plus cases are reporting asymptomatic with mild disease but 15 percent or so are symptomatic requiring hospitalization and 5 percent within this are turning critical," said Mujtaba Askari of HHF.

A large section of suspected cases is not being tested, fear going to government Hospitals and cannot afford expensive private health care. Hence are seeking treatment from local clinics/physicians and are being taken to hospitals in the last minute in critical conditions.

Ever since the coronavirus scare hit the city, people in the Old City, especially youth, in spite of warning have been moving freely. Even violating night curfew, said Mehdi, a resident of Purani Haveli. There is a need for the government to impose curfew strictly.

Mohammed Mujeeb, a resident said, "Youngsters are roaming without a care. Little do they realize that the elderly at home are vulnerable targets. It looks like it is going to peak now."

MLA Bahadurpura constituency, Moazzam Khan too tweeted alerting people to stay at home and cited Italy and the consequences.
