North Zone Task force sleuths on Monday arrested a gang involved in thefts of mobile phones in autos and recovered 19 cell phones, an auto, Rs 54,500 all worth Rs 5 lakh from the possession of them.

The accused were identified as Mohammed Ibrahim Hussain (28), Mohammed Shareef (26), Syed Gayaz Hashmi (28) and Syed Rasheed Hussain (39).

According to City Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar, the accused were involved in 11 offences. The prime accused Ibrahim Hussain, a habitual cell phone thief, was released from Chechalguda Jail in August, 2019.

Later he met the another offender Shareef and formed a gang with his associates Hashmi, Mohammed Hassan (absconding) and Syed Rasheed Hussain (receiver).

They would commit theft of cell phones, wallets from passengers in auto rickshaws.

As per their plan the accused Hashmi used to run a passenger auto in and around Secunderabad, Nampally, Afzalgunj Bus Station, Railway stations, meanwhile the prime accused Hussain along with his associates would be sitting in their auto as passengers and waiting at bus stations, Railway station areas and target the passengers who were waiting to board transporting auto and offer them to sit in middle seat.

While travelling one of accused talks with the passenger and another accused commit theft of cell phone or wallet of the passenger, later they request them to get down from the auto due inconvenience without taking fair charges from him and sped away from the place.

Hussain used to dispose the stolen cell phones at mobile shops through Rasheed Hussain and share the profits.

By verifying the CCTV footage and on tip- off near Secunderabad Railway Station, the Task Force sleuths trapped and arrested the four accused.

The accused along with seized material handed over to Begumpet Police for further investigation.
