Hyderabad: Heavy rainfall on Sunday led to water logging at several places in Greater Hyderabad limits and taking heavy toll on commuters with hours-long traffic jams.

At some places, there were traffic congestions unusual for a regular Sunday.

The stretch from Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills to Hitec-City and Madhapur was worst-affected as heavy water logging was seen at Shilparamam. Traffic and GHMC personnel were seen diverting the traffic at many places.

They used JCBs and motor pumps to flush out the flooded water from water logging points. Cyberabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar personally reviewed the situation with GHMC officials and engineers.

In each zone under the Cyberabad Commissionerate, 10 to 12 teams along with the disaster management personnel were working to clear the water logging points.

The Commissioner said the problem was increasing every year because of the new water logging points. Sajjanar stated that in consultation with the GHMC and JNTU experts, they will look out for a permanent solution for the free flow of traffic in the IT corridor.

But the heavy rainfall for more than one hour in the city once again on Sunday afternoon hours created problems for city commuters.

Waterlogging was seen in areas like Nampally, Abids, Koti, Malakpet, Dilsukhnagar, L B Nagar, Uppal, Habsiguda, Amberpet, Musheerabad, Secunderabad, Khairatabad, Panjagutta, SR Nagar, Yousufguda, Kukatpally, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Kondapur, Gachibowli, Tolichowki, Mehdipatnam, etc.

Since the drainages were blocked the flooded water came on to the roads affecting the smooth flow of traffic. Many commuters faced problems since their vehicles stopped in the rain as water entered into the silencers.

M Ravi Kumar, a resident of Uppal and works in a corporate company in the Hitech city, said he had a nightmarish experience on Friday evening getting stuck in the traffic for three to four hours and said 'thank god' at least it was a holiday for him on Sunday which saved him from facing the same situation again.

N Raju, a software engineer, also echoed similar sentiments. He said it took him more than four hours to reach his house in Amberpet from his Gachibowli office.

The situation was horrible on that day and he got joint pains which made him to consult a doctor. Many city residents posted their disappointment on Twitter and Facebook detailing the pathetic condition of roads, water stagnation and heavy traffic congestion.

They questioned the government and its machinery for the poor preparedness.
