The authorities of Telangana have announced the creation of another important organization, the Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential Drugs or TG SAFE. Thus, the government lifts the lid on the new era of food and drug safety. Earlier, the government had decided to combine the Food Safety and Drugs Control departments. Therefore, the unified control and management of these two sectors have begun. Now, the authorities of Telangana will take additional steps to license, inspect, sample and test food, drugs and cosmetics for consumers.

TG SAFE will comprise wings dedicated to Drug Administration, Food Safety, Enforcement, Legal & Prosecution, Laboratory operations, and Administration. The government plans to consolidate food safety and drug testing laboratories under a single laboratory division. To curb irregularities and adulteration, TG SAFE will implement intelligence-led and risk-based inspections. The Director General of Police (DGP) will allocate police personnel to assist with enforcement activities. TG SAFE operations will commence in the 'Cure' area in the initial phase.

The government is prioritizing the 'Cure' area due to the high concentration of food businesses and pharmaceutical establishments located there. Additionally, a state-level committee will be constituted to modernize the food and drug regulatory system. The committee will focus on testing, intelligence, data analysis, legal support, and laboratory infrastructure. Through the establishment of TG SAFE, the government is placing greater emphasis on public health and consumer safety. The orders regarding TG SAFE will come into effect on August 15, 2026; the Department of Medical, Health, and Family Welfare has issued G.O. Ms. No. 67 to this effect.

Avinash Mohanty Appointed as TG SAFE Commissioner

The Telangana government has issued a gazette notification appointing Avinash Mohanty as the TG SAFE commissioner.
