Telangana meets record power demand without cuts: Bhatti Vikramarka

Ministers inspect Pulichintala hydel power station; review its generation capacity

Huzurnagar: Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka said Telangana was supplying uninterrupted power to consumers despite a sharp rise in peak demand and a decline in hydel generation caused by inadequate water availability.
Bhatti said the State’s peak power demand, which stood at around 15,000 MW during the corresponding period earlier, had now risen to nearly 20,000 MW.
At the same time, hydel generation had declined by about 4,000 MW due to drought-like conditions and reduced water levels in rivers and reservoirs. “This had created an additional burden of nearly 8,000 MW,” he said.
Bhatti, along with Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy, inspected the Pulichintala hydel power station and reviewed its generation capacity and performance.
He also visited the unit control room and reviewed a presentation by officials.
Speaking to the media, Bhatti said all hydel projects in the State were ready to operate at full capacity and that the decline in generation was solely due to inadequate water availability. Rising temperatures and deficient rainfall had aggravated the situation, he said.
The government remained committed to providing 24-hour power supply to domestic consumers, particularly during peak night-time demand, which was being met through thermal power generation, he said.
Bhatti noted that Telangana’s peak demand had reached the same level as Karnataka, which has a peak demand of around 20,000 MW, while Andhra Pradesh’s demand stood at about 12,000 MW.
He urged people to use water judiciously, warning that inadequate rainfall could lead to water scarcity in the coming months. Water should be conserved for drinking needs of people, livestock and birds until the next monsoon, he said.
Bhatti congratulated GENCO employees for their efforts in maintaining uninterrupted power supply.
