Nidmanur(Nalgonda): Even as the government is calling for efforts to conserve water anticipating drought-like conditions due to the Super El-Nino, water leaking from a sluice near Narsimhula Gudem Major canal under the Nagarjuna Sagar Left Canal system has triggered concern among local farmers.

Following information from residents on Tuesday, officials of the Nagarjuna Sagar Project (NSP) rushed to the spot and inspected the leakage. The officials said the leakage occurred after rocks beneath the sluice shifted, allowing water to escape.

As an immediate precaution, the water released from Nagarjuna Sagar has been reduced by 3,000 cusecs. Officials are attempting to control the flow by placing sandbags and grass bundles at the affected location.

Meanwhile, the Nalla Chouta Cheruvu tank in Nidamanur mandal is full and water is overflowing through its surplus weir, adding to farmers’ concerns. Farmers fear that the situation could worsen at any moment and are anxious about the possible impact on their agricultural lands. They have urged the authorities to take immediate steps to prevent further leakage and undertake permanent repairs to the damaged sluice to avert any potential danger. Revenue, Irrigation Department (IB) and NSP officials are monitoring the repair works and overseeing efforts to contain the leakage.
