Trump declares churches 'essential'

Washington: US President Donald Trump has called on state governors to reopen places of worship currently shut due to transmission fears.

Churches and mosques were "essential services", the US president said. "In America, we need more prayer, not less," Trump said, pledging to 'override' governors who ignored his instructions.

The president does not have direct powers to do this, but he can withdraw federal aid to states.
