New Delhi: In a setback for Congress leader Hardik Patel just weeks ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the Gujarat High Court on Friday rejected his plea seeking a stay on his conviction in the 2015 Mehsana rioting case.

As per the Representation of the People Act, 1951, Hardik Patel won't be able to contest the upcoming general election due to his conviction. Patel, who joined the Congress on March 12, had expressed his willingness to contest the election from Jamnagar Lok Sabha seat.

April 4 being the last date of filing of nominations in Gujarat, Patel has a few days to challenge the judgement in the Supreme Court.

The court of Justice Uraizee observed that the Congress leader had several criminal cases and 17 FIRs registered against him despite an undertaking.
