gmh2 Warangal: Minister for Information Technology and Services Ponnala Lakshmaiah said that Governments have been taking steps to bring down mortality rate among newborn children and women.A He was speaking after inaugurating special newborn-baby care unit (SNCU) at Government Maternity Hospital (GMH) in Hanamkonda on Sunday. He said steps were being made to provide quality health care to newborn babies. Four SNCUs with a cost of Rs 66 lakhs were set up at GMH, Chanda Kanthaih Memorial Hospital, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital and at Eturunagaram government hospital. In order to reduce infant and maternal death ratio, the union government has introduced national rural health mission across the country. As part of the initiative Asha workers were being appointed for every 1000 women in the villages for the safety of pregnant and lactating mothers, the minister added. Referring to the GMH he said annually about 7000 child deliveries taking place at the hospital and that was why the hospital capacity was increased to 100-beds. Government chief whip Gandra Venkataramana Reddy said that the State Government has introduced 'Marpu' and 'Indiramma Amrutha Hastam' for the welfare of women and children. Warangal (West) MLA D Vinay Bhasker has provided an electricity generator worth Rs 5 lakhs for the unit. MP S Rajaiah, MLA K Sridhar, district collector Rahul Bojja, district health and medical officer Dr. P Sambasiva Rao, GMH superintendent Dr. Viveka nanda and others were present.
