Singareni cuts coal supplies to AP thermal projects

  • Two power stations – RTPP, NTPP – hit by coal shortage
  • If supplies do not come, plants may be shut down

Hyderabad/Kadapa: With two major thermal power stations -- Rayalaseema Thermal Power Project (RTPP) in Kadapa and and Narla Tata Rao Thermal project (NTPP) in Vijayawada -- facing acute coal shortage, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana which are already reeling under power shortage are likely to be pushed into greater crisis.

According to officials, these projects had not received coal from Singareni Collieries resulting in shutting down two units in RTPP and reduction of power generation from NTPP. This has forced the power utilities to impose power cuts in districts ranging from 5 to 6 hours in urban areas and over 9 hours in rural areas. Even supply to Industries has been stopped in parts of Telangana and AP since Sunday morning.

Singareni Collieries is supposed to supply 3.3 lakh tonnes of coal per month. However, it is now supplying only 2.2 lakh tonnes per month resulting in huge gap between demand and supply. Incidentally, the Singareni Collieries has an agreement with RTPP to supply coal till 2030. For all the five units of RTPP, 15,000 -16,500 tonnes of coal is needed per day. At present only 12,000 tonnes of imported coal stock was available with RTPP.

RTPP CEO Kumar Babu said that the power plant had received 3,500 tonnes of coal on Sunday but that was not sufficient to meet the requirement of even one unit. He felt unless both the governments discuss and take a quick decision, the power crisis could further worsen.

The shortage of power now being faced by Andhra Pradesh was 20 million units (mu) and in Telangana the shortage is of 10 million units. RTPP had generated only 630 mw power out of the total installation capacity of 1050 mw due to coal shortage.

Officials are worried that if the project does not receive fresh coal stocks in the next 24 hours, the RTPP will have no option but to shut down generation completely. The NTPP is also facing coal shortage due to non- supply of coal from Singareni Collieries. It generated only 1400 mw of power out of its installed capacity of 1760 mw.

When contacted the officials of the power utilities said that no alternative arrangements were made to meet the power demand as yet.
