GHMC union calls off strike
The Bhagyanagar Municipal GHMC Employees’ Sangh (BMS) called off their strike that lasted two days after successful negotiations with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner Somesh Kumar.

On Friday, Somesh Kumar held discussions with Sankar, president, BMS, and representatives of the union, after which the strike was called off.

The BMS had demanded a hike in pay by 27 per cent. The strike commenced on Thursday midnight. Though Somesh Kumar held a couple of round of talks with the members of the union earlier, the talks failed.
The strike was called off as certain demands out of the 11 were met. The Municipal Commissioner gave instructions to zonal commissioners to implement maternity leave to outsourced women employees. Also the decision to provide uniform, shoes and raincoats went down well with the striking employees.
The last time the salary was raised to the sanitation workers. The Commissioner said that the matter is being pursued to increase the salaries to all other department workers.
“The proposal to raise the salary of outsourced employees from Rs 6,700 to Rs 8,500 was forwarded to the Governor before the general elections. The Governor had placed the decision in the hands of the new government. I had written to the new government again and the file is now being considered by the finance department,” said Somesh Kumar.
Heaps of garbage was lying unattended at many places in the city for two days. Areas such as Panjagutta, Ameerpet, Kothapet, Ramanthapur and parts of Secunderabad, were badly affected. The strike was called at a crucial juncture, when the city is celebrating Bonalu and Ramzan, in the midst of monsoon season.
The crucial problem which was faced by the GHMC was that many garbage trucks were held up due to the strike. The sanitation staff clears 3,800 tonnes of garbage every day from the city and in the festive season it increases by another 200 tonnes. Though Somesh Kumar had directed Zonal Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners to deploy vehicles and sanitation staff in all the 150 wards as a contingency measure, it was a tough ask to ensure cleanliness.
The striking workers are now confident of their problems being resolved.
