Hyderabad: The Telangana government is all set to extend the benefits of Arogyasri to primary healthcare, which will cover beyond the current list of 938 diseases and also include minor operations.

Speaking to media persons in Secretariat, Deputy Chief Minister T Rajaiah said that the government would utilise Rs 113 crore of hospital development fund and Rs 54 crore of the Arogyasri HealthCare Trust for implementing the scheme.

The Minister added if care was taken at the initial stages of the disease, it would not become necessary to spend Rs 2 lakh on a patient with chronic diseases.

On revamping of government hospitals, he said that the government has already sanctioned Rs 200 crore for upgrading Osmania Hospital. Due to the heritage status of it, the government was trying to identify a new location. A portion of land from Chanchalguda is amongst the ideal locations for new hospital. He welcomed the Union government for its positive gesture for Telangana's proposal of coming up with super speciality hospitals, on the lines of AIIMS.

The government, Rajaiah said, had spent Rs 100 crore for government hospital in Nizamabad and was ready to spend another Rs 100 crore. He said the government was ready to accept the proposal of Singareni Collieries, which was ready with the plans of a hospital with Rs 200 crore at Khammam or Karimnagar.

All the primary units would have 40-bedded hospitals, as per the promise made by the government in its manifesto, he noted.

Since the government hospitals were accounting for only 30 per cent of the operations, he said his department would propose the cabinet that at least a total of 50 to 60 per cent of these operations to be conducted in government hospitals.

All major surgeries, including brain, heart, kidney, spine etc, should be conducted in the super specialty hospitals run by the government.

The Minister described the allocation of 200 medical seats by Medical Council of India to Telangana State as the 'victory' of the government, which had pursued the matter with the Centre. The government colleges, which had 650 seats until now, will have 850 seats making it to the total of 2,950 medical seats.
