Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh government has decided to integrate technology with Agriculture to make it a profitable profession.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu along with Agriculture Minister P Pulla Rao addressing the media in Hyderabad on Wednesday

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday said his government would take the help of remote sensing technology to map the soil conditions across the State and would guide the farmers on the use of fertilizers in a balanced manner.

This would help the farmer to reduce the cost of production while get better and quality yield. The agriculture department, he said would also encourage mechanised farming and “drought-proofing of rain-fed areas”.

Naidu, who released a white paper on agriculture, said the aim of the government was to reduce the financial burden on the farmers and increase productivity. “Efforts will be made to ensure that agriculture in AP becomes climate resilient, sustainable, productive and profitable one. We want to transform agriculture from a way of life into an enterprise,” he said.

He further added the agriculture extension services would be strengthened and the government would go in for promoting agri-based industries in each district. A separate policy for this would soon be announced, Naidu added.

The Chief Minister said to enhance the agriculture production the government would take the help of ongoing research in various agricultural universities and would develop suitable high-yielding varieties in paddy, ground nut, pulses and other crops which are resistant to pests and diseases with tolerance to floods.

Replying to questions, Naidu said a comprehensive soil health card would be given to each farmer containing the details of the crops that can be grown in his/her land.

“Farmers will be encouraged to produce their own seeds through ‘Seed Village Programme’ to make quality seeds available at an affordable price. Prakasam, Chittoor, Anantapur, Kurnool and Kadapa districts will be made as ‘Seed Production Hubs’ he said.

Turning his ire on the 10-year regime of the Congress government in united AP, he said, the Congress government had ruined agriculture sector completely.

The failure of the previous government forced 1,943 farmers to commit suicide.

The number of farmer suicides from 1994 to 2003 was just 310. The then Congress leadership tried to politicise this by bringing AICC chief Sonia Gandhi to Anantapur at that time. But, in the past 10 years, as many as 1,943 farmers had committed suicides, he remarked.
