To maintain public health and cleanliness across the city, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has notified eight arterial stretches as ‘Litter Free’ zones. The stretches include Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Khairtabad, Begumpet, Panjagutta, Somajiguda and NTR Marg. Stringent rules would be enforced as per the provisions of the GHMC Act, 1955, and Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2000, for littering on those stretches.

In the notified areas, the corporation will make arrangements for collection of garbage twice a day -- from 11 am to 2 pm and from 8 pm to 10 pm. The GHMC has requested residents, shop owners and street vendors of the notified roads to segregate garbage for which two dust bins would be provided-- green dustbin for wet waste and white dustbin for dry waste.

Anybody who violates the rules would be fined in five phases. Rs 500 would be charged as fine for the first violation, Rs 1,000 for second, Rs 3,000 for third, Rs 5,000 for fourth and Rs 10,000 including criminal prosecution and cancellation of trade licence for the fifth violation. On conviction, the offender would be liable for imprisonment which may extend up to three months.
